How to Make Google Chrome Default iPhone Browser

Default iPhone Browser

iOS 14 comes with a number of updates and one of them involves changing your default apps. Currently, you can change your default mail app and browser though I would love to see maps included in the future since the Apple Maps barely works in my country. Google Maps would be the best default app.

To change your default browser on iPhone, go to settings > Chrome >Default Browser App then change your default browser to Chrome assuming you already have Chrome browsers installed on your device. There is an option in iOS 14 to do this. Update to iOS 14 by going to Settings > General > Software Update. You should find an update if your device is supported, check iOS 14 compatible devices. iOS 14 comes in at around 2.45 GB depending on your specific device. The default browser on iOS is Apple’s own Safari.

So how does the new default browser work?

When you are in an app like messages and receive a URL, click it and a pop-up message shows up notifying you that messages want to open Chrome or any other browser you opted to set as default. This behavior does not affect web-kits built into other apps like Twitter. Safari will still open the URL.

NB: These are the official steps to change the default browser. I followed them and they worked but after two nights it had reset to Safari. I will continue monitoring this behavior then make an update below this post. This could be a mistake on my end or iOS 14 just does that.

UPDATE: iOS 14.0.1 fixes this bug. Initially, restarting your iPhone reset your default browser to Safari. Check out iOS 14 overview and features.
