Android M and Devices that will Receive it

Android M. Muffins, Milk Shake, Mellon(NO), Moon Pie, Matzo…… Keep guessing. The list is endless. Whatever Google will call it. Android M is coming by the end of this week. Well, its that time of the year when owning a nexus device is something precious. Not for anything but because you are guaranteed to get a system update whenever there is a new version from Google. later this week, Google will be unleashing a new version of Android called Android M  (still not sure what M really stands for) during Goole I/O and almost all modern Nexus devices will be updated sooner thereafter. Thanks to the Android pit. Personally, I expect Android M to feature a lot of security features like Knock Code just like the one on LG devices, we saw Kill Switch that used to be on Samsung devices being incorporated into Android 5.1.1. It will also feature a lot of bugs patched from  Lollipop like the famous memory problem and much more, probably with fingerprint scanner incorporated into the System by default.  Other features may include enhanced Android wear integration and even an inclination to smart home features.

As mentioned earlier Not all Nexus devices will be receiving the Android M update.  To break it down simply, Google guarantees a system update for Nexus devices two years after they are released and also security patches for three years. Do not expect it on nexus 4, nexus 10, and nexus 7 (2012) though we still expect security patches for the tablet (Nexus 7).

The devices expected to receive the update are Nexus 7(2013), Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 . My next phone will be a Nexus. I can’t stand installing custom  ROMs that malfunction at times.

As I explained earlier about how updates work, OEMs will still need to take a little more time before they finally get to release this latest version of Android. You may note that most devices do not even run Android 5.1 already yet google released it months ago. This is because manufacturers still need to add their own customizations after getting it from Google and then different carriers in the world will also want to add their own bringing delays. This takes a lot of.  Luckily for some of us who have an Internationally unlocked version. The delay though is still something we may not like.

When it comes to HTC, I expect the One M9, M9 plus and M8 to be updated soon. Also E8 and E7 might be lucky enough though do not invest a lot of hope in them.

Samsung will update Galaxy S5, S6 and S6 Edge and Note 4. I am not sure of the note 4 Edge since it wasn’t a popular device and well, updating it might not make much sense when there are better ones like the famous Galaxy S4. Others from Samsung are just speculations though they don’t have a lot of hope on them.

Sony is one company least talked about. If you may remember, people with Sony Xperia Z1 already have android 5.0.X. This is really one aging devices and it was the least of my expectations. Other later devices from Sony after that on that line got Lollipop. I expect Sony to update the ones that were updated to lollipop to also make it to M. They include Z1, Z2, Z2 COMPACT, Z3 and the upcoming Z4. Other Sony devices will most likely never see this update.

Other smaller OEMs might go with only their latest flagships for updates and sacrifice the rest. All the devices mentioned above will still take time to be updated and we might not see them even till the year ends. Just take some good pills of patience.
